TROPICAL CYCLONE DEFINITIONS:

TROPICAL DISTURBANCE- Organized area of tropical convection

TROPICAL DEPRESSION- Tropical low with a closed contour of surface pressure and maximum sustained winds less than 39 mph

TROPICAL STORM- Tropical low with maximum sustained winds between 39 mph and 73 mph

HURRICANE / TYPHOON / SEVERE CYCLONE-- Tropical low with maximum sustained winds greater than 73 mph. These intense cyclones are rated using the Saffir-Simpson scale shown below

NOAA WATCHES AND WARNINGS:

TROPICAL STORM WATCH: Tropical Storm conditions are possible in the specified area of the Watch, usually within 48 hours

TROPICAL STORM WARNING: Tropical Storm conditions are expected in the specified area of the Warning, usually within 36 hours

HURRICANE WATCH: Hurricane conditions are possible in the specified area of the Watch, usually within 48 hours. During a Hurricane Watch, prepare to take immediate action to protect your family and property in case a Hurricane Warning is issued

HURRICANE WARNING: Hurricane conditions are expected in the specified area of the Warning, usually within 36 hours. Complete all storm preparations and evacuate if directed by local officials


TROPICAL CYCLONE PREPARATION:

1. Have supplies on-hand to board buildings if necessary
2. Store fresh drinking water
3. Have battery operated TV, radio, phone and have a supply of fresh batteries
4. Have a supply of food that requires no cooking or refrigeration
5. Evacuate coastal areas if prompted
6. Be especially alert to flooding since most tropical cyclone deaths result from flooding
7. Make sure gas tanks are full
8. Have extra cash
9. Have an insurance policy
