LAKE-EFFECT SNOW SOUNDING

  • Downwind from Great Lakes (Northern Michigan sounding)
  • Below freezing throughout troposphere
  • Weak wind shear
  • Saturated profile near surface
  • Favorable wind direction and wind speed
  • Adequate temperature gradient between lake and 850 temp
  • Steep lapse rate in lower troposphere
  • Factor on sounding below that is unfavorable: Inversion is shallow (inversion closer to the surface than 700 mb such as this case tends to limit the amount of heavy snow that can occur)
  • Besides the low inversion everything on sounding below is favorable for lake-effect snow
