NOR’EASTER: UPPER LEVELS

METEOROLOGIST JEFF HABY

This writing is the second on Nor’easters. This writing will focus on how the storm will look in the upper level (500 to 300 mb).

Troughing: Height contours will dip to the south creating a large trough. This is typical with cold core lows. The trough can cover an entire half of the North American continent. The trough is created due to the lifting from the storm and the cold air that is brought to the south and east by the storm.

Polar jet: The polar jet stream will wrap around the storm system. The winds can be over 150 knots. The strong winds are produced by the strong low level temperature gradient.

The model panels below show how a Nor’easter will look at 500 mb (first image) and at 300 mb (second image).
